Brief Biography

Charlie Goldsmith is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University. Charlie provides support for a variety of different research programs at St. Joseph's Healthcare as well as throughout the City of Hamilton and beyond. He serves as a statistician/methodologist on a variety of different trials and studies and in general provides strong leadership in conducting efficient answers to important clinical questions.

He received his PhD in Experimental Statistics/Mathematical Statistics from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA in 1969, and his MSc in 1963 and his BSc in 1961 in Statistics/Mathematics, both from University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Charlie is a Fellow of The American Statistical Association and in 1995 won a Founders Award from The American Statistical Association. He is currently a member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of Biopharmaceutical Statistics, The Journal of Rheumatology, Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety, and The Palmer Journal of Research. He has served on provincial and national grant review bodies including the Health Services Research Panel of The Arthritis Society and the Epidemiology Committee of the National Cancer Institute.

Research Interests

Charlie's research interests include applied health research, clinical trials, pharmacoepidemiology, as well as applications of experimental design to a variety of health problems. He is particularly interested in teaching biostatistical methods, clinical trials methodology, data analysis, continuous quality improvement and programme evaluation.
